WOOSTER SQUARE

PUBLIC

PIANO

enjoy the serendipity

First New Haven Public Piano is now in Wooster Square!

Outdoor public Street Pianos are popping up in many cities; they bring a vibrancy to urban areas that is bringing communities together and building excitement wherever they are found. They encourage serendiptious engagement between people and with the urban landscape.

Montreal, for example, started a program in 2012; pianos are installed in many locations throughout the city, and are operational during the summer months during daytime hours.

Pianos are locked and covered securely during non-playing hours and before forecasted rain events!

Wooster Piano is a project that I have coordinated with local leaders and neighborhood residents and was approved by New Haven Parks Department in 2017. The piano was installed in Russo Park (DePalma Court and site of the Farmers Market) and opened to the public on Saturday Sept 30 2017. At the end of the season in 2017, it was stored at New Light School where students painted the piano with vibrant colors to evoke a cherry blossom theme. For the 2018 playing season, the piano is sited on the other side of Russo Park (De Palma Court and Wooster St.) Playing hours will be from approximately 11 am to dusk during good weather.

The costs of this program are minimal; the piano is donated, so the majority of the cost has been for the all-weather fitted cover. The project has gone extremely well and I believe could be a model for expanding the program to neighborhoods across the city.
